About PMI

The Pacific Marinelife Institute

Pacific Marinelife Institute is a private Australian marine research and education organisation. Taking a whole of ecosystem approach to its projects, the Institute supports and manages a wide range of marine research projects, community education programs and industry quality accreditation schemes. Originally established in 1991 as the non-profit CFA Fishery Research Foundation by a group of game fisherman and crews, the now private Institute is involved in the monitoring and research of reef fisheries, mapping the biodiversity of rocky and coral reefs, study pelagic fish species, implementing a range of eco offset programs and monitoring cetacean populations.

Our Marine Research and Edcuation Programs

The Sportfish Project
The Sportfish Project combines the FishStats long term monitoring program for rocky reef , estuary and coral reef fish; the gamefish project and Fishing Museum into one fishery research and education program. FishStats, commenced in 1993 monitors fish catches, angler effort, habitat sustainability, environmental trends, recruitment stocks and assists in age, growth and reproduction studies.  Used to assist in representing key stakeholder groups, the FishStats database includes information on nearly 40000 trip days. The Gamefish Project engages both recreational anglers and the fishing tourism industry to support increasing information about the biology and status of gamefish populations, improve effectiveness of tagging programs, develop best fishing practices and identify key game fish populations aggregations or migrations.  While the Fishing Museum is an Institute initiative to be housed principally online exhibiting fishing's past and living history from Australia and around the Pacific. Preserving the achievements, stories, memories and memorabilia of the people, places, boats, events, fish and organisations that are part of our fishing history; and creating an important resource to be used in future fisheries management.

ReefHabitat Project
ReefHabitat Project is a long term reef monitoring and education project conducted in cooperation with the community as part of their recreational dives or a travel based project team. The project monitors coral and rocky reef environments using volunteer observations to generate a multimedia database of species observations, video transects, 3D maps and climatic information. This will create a community accessible visual catalogue different reefs.

Friends of the Dolphin
Working with the community to compile dolphin sightings and support cooperative research projects, the Institute's Friends of the Dolphin program aims to develop a multimedia database on the dolphin populations of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Combining long term tracking of specific populations with expeditions, volunteer observer programs and community education to monitor the health of the region's dolphin populations.

Oceans 2 Green
Oceans 2 Green is an eco offset program designed specifically to help divers, anglers, boat owners, the marine tourism industry and general marine industry offset their eco footprint. O2G supports the rehabilitation of reefs, fisheries, mangrove forests and coastal forests to reduce carbon emissions and direct marine activity impacts. An O2G Eco Offset Card program allows businesses to retail the offsets to their clients with purchases credited against the operators eco footprint and O2G Accreditation status.

The Stripe Club
Created for children up to the age of 12 years, The Stripe Club helps introduce children to our marine environment, its amazing animals and the exciting ways to explore our oceans. The Stripe Club adventure will grow to include a subscription program, reward system, Internet adventure, touring education units, junior research expeditions, family friendly accreditation scheme, and education programs for home and the classroom.
